It’s through a statement released Friday by Disney’s Chairman Alan Horn that they announced that they would not continue their business relationship with James Gunn.
The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him. – Alan Horn
James Gunn replied very soon with a statement of his own:
My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. I have regretted them for many years since – not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time. Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. Even these many years later, I take full responsibility for the way I conducted myself then. – James Gunn
He has since then received support from several celebrities and fans including Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer)
It all started on Friday, when, following a verbal joust between James Gunn and right wing twitters, Jack Posobiec released a screenshot displaying 2008 – 2009 tweets from James Gunn where he joking about controversial topics such as pedophilia and rape.
Following this tweet, that started an uproar, James Gunn sent a series of tweets about his former tweet-life:
James Gunn, who directed GOTG vol 1 & 2 was already working on the script of Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3 and had announced that he would start shooting in the fall for a release in 2020.
Disney on their end had not yet confirmed any release date. Depending on how far into the script James Gunn was, it might take quite some time before this movie hits the theaters.
